Passionate cooks invite people from different origins to share home cooked meals and discover authentic cuisine.
Eating with a local and sharing great food is the perfect moment to discover new people with different cultures and common interests.
A unique opportunity to be invited in someone’s home to share a meal and have an unforgettable experience.
With Cookening, we want to bring people together around good food. We want to change the way people eat when they’re traveling and create the way travelers meet local people, but more globally, we want to ease how foreigners meet with locals, or locals meet with foreigners.
A meal is by far the first social moment we have in our busy lifes, so why not trying to make it even more social and even more open to other people? Good food and a good dinner are things designed to be shared. That’s how Cookening started.
Cookening is a platform connecting « Hosts » and « Guests » around home cooked meals. Hosts are passionate cooks in a city, ready to share their meal, based on cuisine from their origins, with people they don’t know, but with people they want to meet. Guests are foreigners to this cuisine, to this country, that want to discover the real local culture, and especially the real authentic food.
But we’re building Cookening to be much more than that. We want Cookening to be a community of passionate and curious people, interested in having new culinary experiences, in meeting new people. Discover our magazine The Art of Cookening to better understand Cookening's values.
Bon Appétit with Cookening!
Everything started in September 2011, when Cédric, one of Cookening co-founders, went to a trip to California with his wife. He stayed at an Airbnb place for the first time, and fell in love with this company. But Cédric did also make the comparison whith something existing in France, called "Tables d'hôtes". Tables d'hôtes are dinner offers that usually go with chambres d'hôtes, the French name for bed and breakfast. He then thought that it would be so great to be able to eat at people places all over the world, as a way to discover local gastronomy and cultures.
Cédric came back to France, but the idea stayed in his mind, especially because all his friends told him that the idea was great, and Cédric himself, passionnate about cooking, couldn't wait for hosting a meal. In December, he left his previous job at a startup, and started building a team. Sébastien and Julien joined him soon, excited about the concept and the challenge, and the first lines of code were written in May 2012 when all of them started working full time on the Cookening project.
In 2012, this small team started building the platform, as one thing was sure for them: the idea behind Cookening is simple, but to be global and successuful, such an idea must rely on a powerful and easy-to-use platform. At the same time, first test dinners were organized by Cédric in his apartment in the 15th. In November, Cookening alpha started, mainly targeting potential hostss, and in March, this alpha was extended to guests, allowing first complete request and meals to take place. And Cookening's story really started then…

Celine was a really super great guest :) ! We spent a really nice afternoon baking Eclairs and Religieuses au chocolat together, and she has been really helpful for this! It was really nice talking about pastry, chocolate and good things together, and I would definitely love to spend another goûter with her, you should do the same!
